the best sheets to keep you cool this summer

Now that summer’s finally on its way, you may have noticed that things are heating up in the bedroom. Nobody wants to feel hot and sweaty while they sleep, so maybe it’s time you switched your sheets for a set that will leave you feeling comfortably fresh – and sleeping soundly.

We’ve put together some tips for choosing the best sheets to keep you cool and comfortable throughout the summer months.

make it natural

Fabrics made from natural fibres are the most breathable and moisture wicking, keeping you cool and dry in the summer months. Synthetic fabrics are less forgiving and don’t allow the same sort of ventilation – so you’ll end up more clammy than cool. In particular, fabrics like linen allow great breathability and have a natural cooling effect. This clever fibre is synonymous with warm weather, but it’s great for winter too. When it’s cold, it’ll carefully preserve your body heat. But when it’s hot, excess heat dissipates through the loose fibres, so your body temperature always feels just right. It’s a double whammy.

the weight of your sheets

Silky sheets feel super lightweight, but they tend to trap heat because they fall so close to your body. Linen is light and sumptuously soft, despite being incredibly durable. In fact, the more you wash linen – the softer it gets.

consider a loose weave

Want a high thread count? It might be fancy, but you could be doing yourself a disservice. Sheets with a very high thread may restrict how air flows underneath the sheets, meaning you might end up hot and bothered. If you want to stay cool while you sleep, consider a bedding set with looser fibres, so that your body can remain at a consistently comfortable temperature. Linen is very cool thanks to its loose weave.

As well as keeping you as cool as a cucumber, linen is made from the flax plant – and is naturally anti-allergenic and bacteria-resistant, as a result. On top of keeping you fresh and cool between the sheets, it’s also great for those with dust or skin sensitivities.

Not a fan of linen? Cotton is also a great material for sheets, especially when it’s warm outside. Opt for a percale weave or jersey sheet – both offer great air circulation for the summer. Bamboo and silk also offer temperature-regulating and breathable properties to keep you cool while you sleep.
